Climate Action Plan
In February 2025, the Sterling Heights City Council approved the city’s first-ever Climate Action Plan (CAP). This strategic document aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance climate resilience, aligning with Michigan’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The CAP focuses on key areas such as buildings, transportation, waste management, natural resources, and public health. Early implementation efforts include adding electric vehicles to the city’s fleet and expanding the urban tree canopy.
Community Partnerships
Local businesses are playing a significant role in supporting the city’s sustainability goals. In October 2025, AGS Automotive became the first partner in the Inspiring Green initiative, contributing $30,000 to plant over 90 new trees and eco-friendly landscaping throughout Sterling Heights. This partnership exemplifies the collaborative efforts between the city and local businesses to enhance environmental stewardship.
Green Infrastructure Projects
In May 2026, construction began on a nearly $1 million green infrastructure project along the Sterling Relief Drain corridor. This project aims to filter stormwater, reduce pollution, and extend a recreational trail. Environmental upgrades include planting more than 2,500 trees and shrubs, 8,000 native perennial pollinator plants, and over 200 pounds of native and pollinator seeds. These efforts are designed to slow and filter stormwater runoff from the city’s urban drainage area.
Community Engagement
The city encourages residents to participate in sustainability efforts through programs like the Sterling Heights Initiative for Neighborhood Excellence (SHINE). This citywide cleanup program enlists volunteers to assist residents who cannot maintain their property due to physical or age-related conditions. Volunteers help with tasks such as raking, weeding, and trimming shrubs, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility for the environment.
